Once Upon A Time...Monsterpieces of the 2000s.

16/10/2011 - 20/11/2011
Exhibition
In the Gallery of the Architecture Museum - la Loge

This exhibition presents a close-up look at the visual stories featured in Monsterpieces and immerses us into a speculative world that questions rehabilitation from an unusual point of view: the retro-perspective. Looking back from the future, we are reminded of the depth and impact of time on today's contemporary silhouettes that are redrawing our skyline.

Once Upon A Time...Monsterpieces of the 2000s.

Aude-Line Duliere and Clara Wong, Oro editions, 2010.

Monsterpieces presents a collection of kids' bestiaries as a critique of Monster Contemporary Architecture. It is a reinterpretation of contemporary iconic forms and the contemplation of the future states of these masterpieces, or more fittingly, Monsterpieces. An exercise on un-learning architecture history, it speculates on the future state of occupancy of contemporary architectural icons, creating a retrospective of future archeological studies. A response and critique of iconic perFORMance - the current architectural trend in competing for attention - this fiction tells the story of building forms that do follow function. In this fabular manifesto, each eccentric form finds its justification in a speculative function, with surreal and dystopian connotations. The Casa da Musica is now a swimming pool, and Selfridge Birmingham is a prison for TV addicts.

These zoomorphic graphic explorations show not only what the future forms of the buildings will be, but also possible re-appropriation of program by their users. By projecting ecological reforms that reshape the anatomy of the buildings, these speculations glorify the absurdity of architectural forms in the 2000s.

Included in this book are essays by Antoine Picon, Monica Ponce de Leon, Timothy Hyde, Jonathan D Solomon, and Spyros Papapetros.

Monsterpieces has been presented at the Architectural Association in London and at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York. It has been reviewed in various American and European architectural magazines and was recently ranked among the "new and noteworthy" books at the MOMA.”
