Spring 1995. A historic street in the centre of Brussels has just been partially reconstructed : fifteen "town houses" lining the perimeter of a block, providing a mix of apartments, shops, offices and a large central garden.

This is a pioneering operation, for it not only proposes a new approach towards creating living space in an urban environment, but also, and above all, brings together seven groups of young European architects in a collaborative project.

These architects were selected through a competition organized in 1989 by the Fondation pour l'Architecture in Brussels and AG 1824, a Fortis company, an important property developer in the Belgian capital. The project has given rise to an exhibition and the publication of a first catalogue.

This second publication, produced on completion of work, permits an asessment of the finished projects. It reports, as widely as possible, on the progress of a truly experimental worksite which already serves as a model for other operations in Brussels and other European cities.
